On Coaching

If your child were trying a new sport, especially if there is even the slightest chance they will be “good” at the sport, what’s the first thing you would do? If you are like most parents, you would get them on a team and, more specifically, with a coach who can help your kid close the gap between how they perform when they start the sport and where you think they can go in their sport. That said, it’s safe to say that you, like most people, clearly see the value of coaching. So, when was the last time you hired or suggested that another adult you know hire a coach to help you when you launched into a new endeavor? Especially in high-stakes endeavors like significant career or life changes, starting a new business, or writing a book.

In my experience, most adults believe they are expected to navigate new planned and unplanned changes on their own. I completely disagree.

In reality, the benefits of coaching extend far beyond sports. Just as a coach can help a young athlete refine their skills and reach their potential, a coach can also guide adults through significant transitions and challenges. Whether starting a new business, embarking on a career change, or tackling a creative project like writing a book, having a coach can provide invaluable support, insights, and strategies.

Coaches offer a fresh perspective, helping you see possibilities and solutions you might not have considered. And fresh perspectives are often just what you need to unlock the next level of creativity or grit required to accomplish your goals.

Speaking of goals, that’s another thing coaches are great for – helping you set realistic goals, develop a plan to achieve them, and stay accountable. As my wise friend Stacy said, “Setting goals is only half the battle; most people run into issues holding themselves accountable to the goals they set.”

Additionally, being partnered with a coach can help you manage your emotions as you navigate the inevitable ups and downs of pursuing significant goals. It’s time to shift the mindset that seeking help is a sign of weakness. On the contrary, recognizing when you need support and actively seeking it out is a sign of strength and wisdom.

Just as we wouldn’t expect a child to master a new sport without guidance, we shouldn’t expect ourselves to navigate life’s complex challenges without assistance. So, the next time you or someone you know is facing a significant change or embarking on a new venture, consider the value of hiring a coach. Investing in professional guidance can make the journey smoother, more enjoyable, and ultimately more successful.
